Horsebox or horse trailer insurance is an important purchase, for many reasons. Not only can you be covered against theft and damage, but frequently you can purchase coverage that will help you take care of the horse too in the event of a breakdown. However, don’t just buy a horsebox insurance policy and think you’re in the clear. There are a few “small print” issues.
Your truck insurance does not necessarily cover your trailer. A lot of people think that the insurance they carry on their towing vehicle (the truck) will also cover the trailer in the event of an accident or breakdown. This is usually not true. If you are involved in an accident while towing your horsebox and it is damaged, your truck policy will not pay out for it to be fixed. Additionally, the truck insurance policy may not even pay to remove it from the side of the road when they tow your truck to the body shop. Look into this important detail if you are thinking about skipping the horse trailer insurance.
Some insurance policies require anti-theft devices to be fitted.
Some insurance policies will not pay if you rent your trailer or use it for non-personal reasons, i.e for business use.
Always read the small print in your policy. Ask whoever you purchased the policy from for clarification if you are unclear about anything.
